Thursday the seventh of January finally arrived. Gloria was retiring and the staff at her work threw her a slap-up meal to celebrate both her birthday and retirement at the local pub. There were the usual gifts and embarrassing speeches. Drink flowed freely and she was nicely merry when two colleagues walked her the short distance home to her flat.

“It’s very kind of you, but it’s really not necessary.” She had said to her gallant companions.

“There were two people killed not far from here a few weeks ago,” one of her colleagues said.

“I know,” said Gloria, smiling to herself. “But I’m quite capable of taking care of myself, honestly.”
